The Real Friendships of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Cast: ‘It’s Like Camp With All Your Best Friends’
From Lola and Rain to the Cousins Beach boys, here’s what we know about their real-life bonds

In Cousins, the tight-knit bond between Conrad, Jeremiah, Steven and Belly is unbreakable, even when romance and heartbreak get in the way. Growing up together in a magical place like Cousins Beach keeps them connected, and a friendship for life is what the four teens have with one another.
The female friendships are strong too, with the years-long relationship between Laurel (Jackie Chung) and Susannah (Rachel Blanchard) and the childhood friendship between Belly and Taylor. But when the cameras stop rolling, does the friendship continue for the cast? Find out whether the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty gets along in real life and more about their close bond.
Belly and Taylor are besties in real life!

On-screen, Belly and Taylor are as thick as thieves, best friends since they were little girls, and it seems that they maintain their friendship behind the scenes as well. Lola Tung (Belly) and Rain Spencer (Taylor) adore each other in real life and have spoken about their bond. Spencer gushed about Tung in an interview.
“I love Lola with every fiber of my being,” Spencer shared. “I think that our friendship has grown and is just so beautiful. I’m really excited that I get to be with someone like Lola going through this process and this journey, because this is her first acting job. This is my second. So, it’s so new for both of us and we get to be support systems for each other in real life, too. And I think that that’s beautiful.”
Love triangles have nothing on the cast

Even though Conrad, Jeremiah and Belly have their issues in The Summer I Turned Pretty, it’s clear they have a tight bond off-screen as well. All three of the stars — Chris Briney, Gavin Casalegno and Tung — have spoken about their connection and what it’s like to work together on set.
“Both Chris, who plays Conrad, and Gavin, who plays Jeremiah, are wonderful people and so easy to work with and so much fun to just be around,” Tung shared. “So, I feel very lucky that we had such a wonderful friendship, and it worked out.”
Casalegno noted similar feelings for his castmates and spilled what it’s like to work with them every day.
“It was so much fun. It’s like getting to go back to summer camp with all of your best friends,” he explained. We all work so well together and just have so much fun on- and even off-set. It was fun hopping back in that friend group again.”

Briney, too, spoke about his friendship with his on-screen girlfriend and brother. He shared what he appreciates about them as scene partners and friends.
“You always give me and the other actors space to deal with things,” Briney said to Tung. “We have fun, a lot of fun on set a lot of the time. But sometimes you aren’t in the space to have fun, sometimes you just need to do your own thing. And that never takes away from the energy that everyone puts into the scene. I appreciate that, the way you give people space.”
He then said to Casalegno, “You’re so kind to the people on set, you go out of your way to make people feel comfortable … I f— with you,” he joked. “I’m glad you’re here.”
The lifelong friendship of Laurel and Susannah

Laurel and Susannah have been friends ever since meeting years earlier in college, their on-screen bond clear as they sip coffee or wine and share advice for each other. And although the two actresses bringing them to life only met while filming the series, their friendship has extended off-screen, too.
“I’m so lucky that I was with Rachel because we just got along instantly, and it was so easy,” Chung shared. In a separate interview, she added, “I just feel really lucky that Rachel and I got to portray this beautiful friendship… It is beautiful to see a long-lasting, firm, and strong female friendship that has ups and downs, and that the support and love is constant no matter what.”
The boys have a tight bond, too

Conrad, Jeremiah and Steven — a.k.a. Briney, Casalegno and Sean Kaufman — also have a close connection. Briney and Kaufman are often seen together and posting with one another, most recently sharing photos from what looked like a couple’s vacation — Briney with his girlfriend Isabel Machado and Kaufman with his supposed girlfriend, Minnie Mills.
“Immediately I just clicked with all of them — with Sean, with Gavin, with David, with Lola, with everybody,” Briney shared. “It was an immediate sort of friendship that you don’t always feel, because there’s a difference between being friends with your coworkers… I talk to Sean probably every day and I talk to Gavin as much as I can.”
Kaufman chimed in with his own appreciation for Briney and Casalegno, pointing out, “I mean, I love these two to death — they have become two of my closest friends over the past year and I’m extremely thankful for that… we’ve got so much in common. The three of us are crazy.”
