How Max’s Stranger Things Wardrobe Could Be Key to Deciphering Her Fate
After much anticipation, Stranger Things 5 is finally around the corner, and Sadie Sink, who stars as Max Mayfield in the show, might have just let us in on an oft-overlooked clue to pay attention to while tuning into the show’s premiere.
If you have been a longtime Stranger Things fan, you know the devil is in the details, and Sadie Sink seems to agree. In a new Character Study interview with Teen Vogue, Sink took the chance to discuss her journey with Max since season 2 — from landing the role to her feelings about Max’s fate in season 5.
In the video, Sink opens up about a detail that mirrors Max’s journey and could be a key clue for interpreting her fate in season 5: her wardrobe, which transforms as Max undergoes personal changes.
“Starting out with Max, [her style] was really sporty, really skater girl with some California influence,” Sink explains in the video, which you can watch above. “We just wanted her to look a little bit different than the other students in Hawkins, Indiana, and it all stayed consistent in season 2. You never really saw her in anything other than a track jacket, her favorite pair of jeans, and some Vans.”
After the initial introduction to Max, came experimentation. “[In] season 3, [her clothes] got really fun,” Sink says. “Max had friends. She was comfortable. She was playing around with her style while still having nods to California and some athleisure, I guess.”
“We definitely played a lot with color and patterns [in season 3],” Sink continues. “It [was] super ’80s and it became super Max that she loves color, which changes in season 4.”
“As she is grieving and working out all of this trauma from Billy’s death, all of the silhouettes and colors become a little bit more muted or baggier, and not a lot of thought or joy is put into how she presents,” Sink says of Max’s season 4 wardrobe.
By the end of season 4, Max’s wardrobe is essentially limited to one piece: her hospital gown.
After falling victim to Vecna’s curse, Max dies before Eleven restarts her heart with her powers. She’s now hospitalized and in a coma.
In the teasers we have gotten for season 5, we see Max still in her hospital gown with Lucas carrying her to their escape. And the hospital gown might be a big clue to Max’s future, signifying a clean slate and an origin point of sorts. Rebirth, if you will.
Speaking to Tudum ahead of the premiere of Stranger Things 5, Sink hinted at Max’s new arc, saying: “We [ended] season 4 in a tough place for Max. Her final moments were her in a hospital bed. Eleven was searching for her in the void and couldn’t find her, so Max is definitely not the way she once was. There’s still a small glimmer of hope, though, and her friends are hanging on to that.”
While we still have to wait to see what’s in store for Max after the hospital, Sink did reveal to Teen Vogue that she is “very happy with Max’s ending in the show.”
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will debut in three installments on Netflix. Volume 1, featuring the first four episodes, will premiere on the streamer on November 26, 2025. Volume 2, the next three episodes, will follow suit on December 25, 2025. The big finale will follow suit on December 31, 2025, both theatrically and on streaming.
