Billy Bob Thornton Opted for a ‘More Humble’ Prosthetic in Landman Scene After the ‘Original’ One ‘Made Everyone Laugh’

“It is surprising to me that people think that was actually Billy doing full-frontal nudity,” the show’s co-creator Christian Wallace said.

NEED TO KNOW

  • One of the most talked-about scenes from Landman season 2 involved a half-nude Billy Bob Thornton in a hotel room
  • Co-creator Christian Wallace said it was “surprising to me that people think that was actually Billy doing full-frontal nudity”
  • The scene involved a prosthetic but it was a “more humble” one than what Thornton, 70, was originally offered, Wallace revealed

Billy Bob Thornton did not go full-frontal in Landman.

In a particularly chaotic scene from the show’s second season, what was meant to be a surprise from Angela (Ali Larter) for Tommy (Thornton) turned into a bit of a mess when he woke up to a waitress in his hotel room, and she started screaming at the sight of his arousal.

As Christian Wallace, who co-created the series with Taylor Sheridan, clarified, “it wasn’t an actual full-frontal” scene for Thornton, 70. A prosthetic was instead used for the memorable moment.

“We had an on-set intimacy coordinator, and the original prosthetic she brought in made everyone laugh,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview posted on Monday, Jan. 19. “We were like, ‘No.’ “

They opted instead for “a more humble alternative” for Thornton, Wallace said.

“It is surprising to me that people think that was actually Billy doing full-frontal nudity,” Wallace continued.

“So I should say props to our intimacy coordinator for making it extremely realistic, and to the props team. They had a whole rig, as Billy called it: ‘Got my rig on.’ “

Season 2 of the hit Paramount+ series about the oil industry in Texas wrapped up on Sunday, Jan. 18. The final scene of the season was a quieter one between Tommy and Angela, which Larter, 49, said was a “special” way to end.

“I live for those scenes, because so much of Angela, when I’m playing her, is high stakes, high emotion, something wild is happening,” she told PEOPLE. “To be able to have a really quiet scene, I just think it was an important and beautiful way to end the season.”

With the introduction of T.L. (Sam Elliott) this season, fans saw Tommy evolve in more ways than one. As Larter explained, there was a “turning point” for the oilman this season after “seeing his father’s life — and his crushing mortality and what that looks like — and having death within the family.”

Witnessing all of that makes Tommy wonder, “What life do I want to live?”

Elliott, 81, for his part, had told PEOPLE before the season premiered that his character would bring “healing” for Tommy.

“We’re going to spend much of this season seeing T.L. early on — but then it becomes both of us, I think — healing that relationship that’s falling apart,” he said, calling the father-son story an “emotional ride.”

Landman season 2 is now streaming on Paramount+.
