The first batch of images from Mike Flanagan‘s series adaptation of Carrie has been revealed.

The series adapts Stephen King‘s career-making novel of the same name for the first time as an eight-episode television show.

The images offer fans their first look at Flanagan’s take on the bloody horror story, which follows Carrie White (this time, portrayed by newcomer Summer H. Howell), as she grapples with her oppressively religious mother Margaret (Flanaverse regular Samantha Sloyan), the arrival of her first period, and bullying from classmates like Chris Hargensen (Alison Thornton) and her boyfriend Billy (Arthur Conti).

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan said of the adaptation, “The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology and the degree to which violence encroaches on our high schoolers, especially in the United States. So that meant we had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience that could use the seeds of these characters King created 50 years ago, but express them completely differently.”
