Mirra Andreeva ensured to thank her coaching team after being told she’s becoming “famous” for only thanking herself in post-match tennis interviews. The Russian teenager came from behind to overcome Croatian star Donna Vekic in the first round of the Australian Open.
Andreeva, 18, lost the first set 6-4, but recovered to take set two 6-3, before taking the third and decisive one 6-0 to move into the next round. She faces Greece’s Maria Sakkari in round two in what looks set to be an intriguing encounter. However, in her post-match interview, she was confronted by something which is seemingly becoming her calling card whenever she’s on the microphone. She is known for thanking herself in her post-match interviews in what is a reference to US rapper Snoop Dogg, who thanked himself when he was granted his star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
When the reporter told Andreeva she is becoming “famous” for her post-match microphone catchphrase, in jest, she said: “I think today, once again. I did everything. I don’t know what my team is doing sitting in the corner doing nothing. Honestly I’m very happy with how I came back in this match.
“How I didn’t lose my focus. How I still tried to go for my shots. Ok maybe Conchita (her coach Conchita Martinez) gave me advice once or twice here and there.. but overall, just all me again.”
It displayed her true colours as a player with a funny sense of humour but also an evident gratefulness towards her entourage. Last Saturday, Andreeva uneviled a custom made jacket which said: “I want to thank myself” in a less than subtle reference towards her amusing post-match ritual.

It was a coat her sponsor Nike gave to her after she won Indian Wells last year. However, she waited more than 10 months to wear it as her victory in Adelaide was her first tournament triumph since her Indian Wells venture last March.
When she won the competition last weekend, she said: “I had this jacket right after Indian Wells. After Indian Wells I didn’t win anything until Adelaide. And I was carrying it in my suitcase for every single tournament I would go. It was a nice present from Nike team when I won the two 1000 tournaments and since then it was sitting in my suitcase, waiting for the moment.
“In Adelaide when I went to the final, I put it in my bag on the bottom, just to have it but not to forget it was there. Luckily I got a chance to wear it for the first time.”
She will be hoping to go all the way in Melbourne so she can get the jacket back out of her suitcase and put it on, while posing with the Australian Open title.
