The blockbuster Captain America: Brave New World grossed $88.5 million during its opening week in North America, with box office sales projected to rise to $100 million by the end of the holiday weekend on February 17.
Despite lackluster reviews and harsh feedback from audiences, the 35th film in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: Brave New World, exceeded expectations in revenue and ranked as the highest-opening weekend film of the year.

In other markets, Captain America: Brave New World brought in an additional $92.4 million, with projected worldwide earnings of $192.4 million by the end of February 17. “This is the first blockbuster week of 2025,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at media measurement and analytics company Comscore.
In this $180 million production, Anthony Mackie takes over the Captain America mantle from Chris Evans. Directed by Julius Onah, Captain America: Brave New World puts Sam Wilson (played by Mackie) at the center of an international disaster following the presidential election of Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford).
Disney’s Marvel movies tend to start strong. However, recent installments in the franchise, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Eternals, and The Marvels, have received poor and polarizing reviews and quickly sank after opening at No. 1.
Marvel Studios, which has shown signs of weakening after the spectacular success of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, will release two more blockbusters in the coming months: Thunderbolts on May 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25.

Sony’s Paddington in Peru opened in second place with $13 million. Sony’s bloody horror film Heart Eyes ranked third with $10 million. Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man held the fourth spot after spending two weeks at No. 1, bringing in another $9.73 million. So far, Dog Man has grossed $69.5 million in North America and $84.4 million worldwide, against a production budget of $40 million.
Rounding out the top five is Na Tra 2 — the animated film has become a massive box office hit in China with $1.6 billion in revenue and is still climbing. The film earned $7.3 million in North America.
