Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of Netflix’s Wednesday, are developing a new animated Addams Family movie for Amazon MGM Studios. The film will be a reboot and will not be connected to Netflix’s hit series or the earlier animated movies.

Speaking on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast, Gough and Millar confirmed they are working with Kevin Miserocchi from the Addams Foundation, along with producers Gail Berman and John Glickman.

Gough said, “We’re rebooting the animated film franchise. It won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected to this show. It will be a brand-new animated Addams Family feature.”

Gough added that Miserocchi, who knew Addams Family creator Charles Addams, is the keeper of the family’s legacy. The project is still in the early stages.

The Addams Family was created by American cartoonist Charles Addams and first appeared as 150 single-panel comics. Over the years, the family has been adapted into television shows, films, video games, comic books, a musical, and merchandise. The first live-action TV series aired on ABC in 1964 and ran for two seasons. In 2019, the franchise returned with a new animated movie, followed by a 2021 sequel.

Netflix’s Wednesday, also created by Gough and Millar, follows Wednesday Addams at a new school as she tries to solve a murder mystery.

Created by Gough and Millar, the show stars Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, alongside Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Christina Ricci, and Moosa Mostafa.

The creators said Wednesday’s humour comes from her worldview, not traditional jokes. “The key with her is not writing a joke, it’s writing to her worldview. Anytime you reach for a joke with this character, you wind up cutting that line,” Gough said.
