Max Verstappen was furious with Kimi Antonelli after the Mercedes driver collided with his Red Bull on the opening lap of the Austrian Grand Prix, forcing both drivers to retire.
Verstappen recorded his first retirement of the Formula 1 season on Sunday (June 29) after Antonelli made contact with him at Turn 3 of the Austrian Grand Prix, the home race for Red Bull.
The four-time world champion had started from seventh on the grid, while Italian rookie Antonelli started ninth, at a track where Verstappen had previously achieved a record five victories.
Antonelli, who caused the collision, was also forced to retire, and the safety car was deployed.
Verstappen called the 18-year-old driver an “idiot” over the radio after telling the team, “I’m done. I got hit really hard.” Later, Antonelli apologized to Verstappen, and the apology was accepted.
