“They’re creepy, they’re kooky—and they’re back on the big screen! The creators of Netflix’s smash-hit Wednesday are officially bringing The Addams Family to life in a brand-new movie. But here’s the twist: while fans are thrilled, there’s one catch that has everyone buzzing. Will it tie directly into Wednesday’s story… or take a darker path all its own? One thing’s certain—our favorite spooky family isn’t done haunting us yet

As the Netflix series, Wednesday, continues its success with the release of Season 2, its creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, have announced plans to create an Addams Family movie. Gough and Millar reveal that this reboot will be animated rather than live-action and that it’s still in its early stages. In a recent podcast interview, Gough shared more details about this upcoming project, revealing that it’s going to be a reboot — meaning it won’t be connected to the Netflix series or the previous animated films that were released in 2019 and 2021. Additionally, they’re involved with Amazon MGM and Kevin Miserocchi from the Addams Foundation. While a scheduled release date has yet to be revealed, both filmmakers hope that this movie will come to the big screen.

Wednesday Creators Developing New Addams Family Movie

“We’re working on it with Amazon MGM and with Kevin Miserocchi who runs the Addams Foundation, he knew Charles Addams and the keeper of the Addams flame, and with Gail Berman and John Glickman. We’re rebooting the animated film franchise. So it won’t have anything to do with the two films before it, nor is it connected with this show. It will be a brand-new Addams feature. There’s not really much we can say about it, because it’s in the very early stages.”

New Addams Family Movie in Works From Wednesday Creators But There's a Twist

Cartoonist Charles Addams created The Addams Family, and it was originally a series of single-panel comics. While the family has mostly been portrayed in live-action, they did have a handful of animated adaptations, with the most recent being 2019’s The Addams Family and 2021’s The Addams Family 2. The recent adaptations of the films received mixed results as both features received poor scores from critics, but gained high praise from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wednesday is the latest Addams Family adaptation, but it mainly focuses on Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega. The highly successful first season introduced this woeful Addams’ daughter, who was sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts, following an incident at school, and gets caught in a murder mystery and learns more about her psychic powers.

The Addams Family' Review: An Ooky Show of Confused Messaging

The first half of Wednesday Season 2 premiered last week, picking up with Wednesday’s second year at Nevermore Academy. She’s now dealing with unwanted attention after the events of Season 1, and she’s not enjoying the popularity. This year, her younger brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) joins the school as he develops electrical powers. Once again, Wednesday is pulled into a mystery when her visions show that her roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), will die because of her, prompting her to try to change her friend’s fate.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Wednesday are available to stream on Netflix. Follow Collider to keep up to date with the latest updates.
