In 1990, the von Bülow story was told on the big screen in Reversal of Fortune, which starred Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons and was produced by Edward R. Pressman and Oliver Stone. It was based on the 1986 book Reversal of Fortune: Inside the von Bülow Case, written by then-law professor Alan Dershowitz. Irons earned an Oscar for his portrayal of the lawyer-turned-socialite.

The movie recounts how Sunny endured a diabetic shock and fell into a coma. Claus von Bülow was charged with attempted murder by giving her an overdose of insulin. Defended by Dershowitz, von Bülow was ultimately acquitted. Sunny von Bülow lived in a vegetative state for almost 30 years before dying in 2008.
Claus von Bülow died in 2019 at age 92.
