A year had passed since Private Ethan Brooks was killed during a rescue mission that saved the rest of our squad.

Every one of us survived because he chose to stay behind.

On the anniversary of his death, the entire platoon returned to the military cemetery to honor the friend we could never replace. We stood silently before his gravestone, placing fresh flowers and saluting as the wind whispered through the rows of white crosses.

Just as we were about to leave, one of the younger soldiers noticed something strange.

There were muddy footprints behind Ethan’s headstone.

Fresh ones.

No other grave had them.

Curious, we walked around to the back and found a loose stone partially hidden beneath overgrown grass. When we moved it aside, we discovered a small rusted metal box buried underneath.

Inside was a weathered notebook… with Ethan’s name written on the first page.

None of us had ever seen it before.

The first entries were ordinary—letters to his parents, memories of training, dreams of returning home.

But the final pages changed everything.

Ethan had written that the mission where he supposedly died wasn’t just an ambush.

He believed someone had deliberately leaked our squad’s location to the enemy.

He had even written down a name.

Our commanding officer.

At first, we refused to believe it.

But tucked beneath the notebook was a military flash drive wrapped in waterproof plastic.

When investigators finally opened it, they found radio recordings, classified documents, and evidence that confirmed Ethan had uncovered a betrayal before his death.

The hero we had mourned for a year hadn’t simply died saving us…

He had died trying to expose the man who had sent us into a trap.
