At first, I thought it was the wind. But when I looked out my bedroom window, I froze.
My mother was walking toward the river behind our house, carrying a heavy black bag over her shoulder. She kept looking behind her as if she was terrified someone might be watching.
Curiosity got the better of me.![]()
I quietly followed her, staying hidden between the trees until I reached the riverbank. Under the pale moonlight, I watched her drag the bag to the edge of the water.
Without saying a word, she pushed it into the river.
The bag disappeared beneath the dark surface with a sickening splash.
My heart pounded. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t move.
The next morning, I returned to the river alone.
The bag had drifted into a patch of reeds near the shore.
My hands shook as I pulled it closer and carefully opened it.
Inside wasn’t a body…
It was dozens of rotting bags filled with spoiled meat, animal remains, and swarms of maggots crawling over everything. The unbearable smell made me vomit into the grass.
I couldn’t understand why my own mother would secretly dump something so disgusting into the river our entire town depended on.
I confronted her that night.
Instead of denying it, she broke down crying.
She admitted she had been paid by the owner of an illegal slaughterhouse to dump their waste in the river so they wouldn’t have to pay for proper disposal. She said the money was helping us survive after my father died.
But the truth became even worse days later.
The town announced that the river’s water had been contaminated for months.
Hundreds of fish were found dead.
Several families became seriously ill.
As police searched the river, they recovered dozens more bags hidden beneath the water—each one proving my mother hadn’t done it just once.
The woman I had trusted my entire life wasn’t hiding a murder…
She had been poisoning an entire town.
